Up until the early 20th c. Lithuanians used to cover their roofs with straws, while those living near the seacoast — reeds. As of the second decade of the 20th c. they were slowly replaced by shingle roofs.
Roofs (be it straw or reed) were done by a roofer and every village had one. They used to be referred to as masters Roofers with better skills used to travel from village to village, cutting shingles and building roofs.
