The Ethnographic Village of Varniškės

The Ethnographic Village of Varniškės

The establishment of Varniškės village dates back to the second half of the 18th c. The village features several old oaks and lindens, including two natural monuments — an oak and a linden tree. The oak of Varniškės is an exceptionally old and peculiar-looking oak, growing along Varniškės, close to Tauragnai-Šeimatis-Daunoriai road, about 2 km south of Daunoriai village. The oak is about 500 years old. Its trunk is hollow from the ground, able to fit 5-6 people inside. During the times of war people used it to hide grain, bacon, other things and even sheep. The tree grows in a glide between forests, in the territory of Pliaušė hydrographic reserve. On 12 June 2008 the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuanian gave it the status of a botanic object of natural heritage, protected by the state. The linden of Varniškiai (trunk —1.2 m wide, height — 28 m) was given the status of a natural monument and included into the list of protected objects in 1999.
